Having said that, it appears that PlayStation owners don’t have to worry about not getting a new Call of Duty game for the foreseeable future. A Bloomberg report suggests that Activision is still going to release at least three new Call of Duty games on both the PlayStation and the Xbox. Unfortunately, the same report can’t guarantee anything beyond the next three Call of Duty games. Not to mention, the trio includes the Call of Duty: Warzone sequel, which is expected to launch in 2023. If we assume that Infinity Ward will release a new Call of Duty game this year with Treyarch taking the lead in 2023, PlayStation owners might start missing out on Activision’s flagship shooter by 2024, at the earliest. If it’s any consolation, this isn’t final. Bloomberg is a trusted source, but the statement did not come from Microsoft or Activision. In addition, Xbox head Phil Spencer has committed to keeping all previous agreements between Activision and PlayStation. Finally, Microsoft hasn’t officially acquired Activision Blizzard yet. The deal isn’t expected to close until Microsoft’s 2023 fiscal year, which will end on June 30, 2023. Ultimately, we don’t think Sony is going to take this lying down. Call of Duty is one of the best-selling titles on the PlayStation. If Sony senses that it will lose the franchise by 2024, the console manufacturer might acquire a new studio to help fill the hole it will leave behind with another marquee shooter. In other news, Sony’s stock took a nosedive following Microsoft’s buyout of Activision Blizzard. Meanwhile, there are reports that Microsoft wants Activision Blizzard to stop making a new Call of Duty game every year down the line.
