The Armored Core series was the studio’s flagship game before the Souls games took over. Like many of the Souls games, Armored Core 6 will focus on the single-player campaign rather than multiplayer co-op. IGN Japan got a chance to sit down with FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki and game designer Masaru Yamamura to discuss the upcoming game. Yamamura was asked if Armored Core 6 would feature multiplayer co-op elements, to which he replied that it will not be available in the story campaign. “We are thinking mainly of a competitive multiplayer mode,” Yamamura revealed, adding “As in past titles in the series, players will be able to show off their own aircraft and have fun competing against each other.” “On the other hand, in the story mode, which is the main part of the game, we have chosen not to include cooperative play because we want to emphasize the dynamic action, the free-running of your aircraft, and the active changes you can make during missions,” he adds. “We are focusing on the intense experience that can only be realized in single-player mode.” Yamamura also discussed Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon will act as a soft reboot for the series. This makes sense as it has been almost a decade since the last entry into the series. The upcoming game will be set on the planet Rubicon 3 where a new energy source set the world on fire. Half a century after the said cataclysmic event, the planet’s inhabitants are now scrambling to harness the resource. The player will be the pilot of an Armored Core and take on missions for MegaCorp and the resistance. Armored Core 6 also won’t be featuring a parry system like other titles from FromSoftware. The game will instead have the “guarding mechanism” similar to, but not like parrying in other Soulsborne titles. “We have not implemented it. There is a guarding mechanism similar to that, but the main thing is just to keep attacking, and the right attack at the right time will break the enemy’s stance,” Yamamura shared. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is shaping up to be an interesting entry into the fan-favorite franchise. Hopefully, FromSoftware captures the essence of the older Armored Core games while also incorporating gameplay elements that made Elden Ring and Sekiro winners of the Game of the Year award.
