CDPR narrative director and lead quest designer, Philipp Weber, explained in an interview with Eurogamer that we’ll never get to see the multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077: Cyberpunk 2077 suffered mightily from the weight of expectations. It didn’t help at all that the game launched as an incomplete product. It took CDPR the better part of the past two years to fix Cyberpunk 2077 and get it to a playable state. Many hoped that the second wind in life it got, thanks mainly to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, was enough to encourage CDPR to go back and work on Cyberpunk 2077. But, neither Edgerunners nor Cyberpunk 2077 is getting new content outside of the first and only paid expansion, Phantom Liberty. Later in the same interview, Weber revealed that CDPR is changing its “long-term approach to online”, adding that the studio will add multiplayer elements “where they make sense.” Weber claims this helps guarantee that the company doesn’t lose its “single-player DNA”. While it would’ve been interesting to see CDPR push through with its original multiplayer plans for Cyberpunk 2077, the reality is it will never happen. Speaking of Cyberpunk 2077, fans shouldn’t expect to hear an update about the sequel to the game until at least 2024. CDPR is currently focused on Phantom Liberty, after which it will devote more resources to The Witcher 4 and the next The Witcher saga. Most likely, the new Cyberpunk 2077 game will come out at the tail end of the current console generation. Finally, Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to get a GOTY edition next year.
