According to GameAwards.net (via ResetEra), Elden Ring has won 149 GOTY awards from Media Outlets this year and the number keeps on growing by the day. The runner-up is, of course, God of War: Ragnarok, with a mere 28 GOTY awards from Media Outlets. Elden Ring won more than a hundred GOTY awards than its closest competition. This means that it’s the best game of the year by a landslide. Kyle Key’s GOTY awards tracker is widely considered the most accurate and objective GOTY tracker available online. It’s tallied GOTY votes since 2003 and what Elden Ring has done is very rare. It’s one of the few GOTY awardees to have more than 100 votes compared to the runner-up. Since 2011, this has only happened four other times. Also, it’s the first game by FromSoftware to ever win this many awards. Previously, FromSoftware’s most-awarded title was Bloodborne, which received 26 GOTY awards from media outlets in 2015.

Before Elden Ring, the studio’s best-selling game was Dark Souls 3 at 10 million units sold. On the other hand, Elden Ring broke past the 10-million mark and ended up selling 13.4 million units by May, making it FromSoftware’s best-selling game by a huge margin. As per the latest tally by NPD, Elden Ring is the second-best-selling game of the year and it’s not like coming second to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a bad thing. The latest Call of Duty game outsold every other media product this year. Somehow, Elden Ring catered to both hardcore fans of the genre and the casual audience, which is a rare thing. Based on this alone, Elden Ring deserves to be the best game of the year and the gold standard for the current generation. Speaking of Elden Ring, the game is expected to get more DLC content next year as well as potentially a live-action adaptation.
