After releasing Mortal Kombat 11 back in 2019, NetherRealm continued to provide support for the latest game in the Mortal Kombat series for a little over two years. After such a run, it seems that the studio is finally calling it quits on Mortal Kombat 11. It recently announced, via Twitter, that it is going to focus on its next project.

What Is NetherRealm’s Next Game?

Mortal Kombat is en vogue these days. After the success of the Mortal Kombat movie, which has already prompted requests for a sequel, players are looking forward to seeing what NetherRealm has in store next for its controversial and uber-violent fighting game series. While fans would have been forgiven for expecting NetherRealm to continue providing support for Mortal Kombat 11 through to the series’ 30th anniversary next year, the studio just announced that it had already released the last DLC for Mortal Kombat 11. Disappointing as it is, you can’t exactly blame NetherRealm. Mortal Kombat 11 has received more post-launch content than any other Mortal Kombat title. It saw a massive campaign expansion in the Aftermath DLC. It also received a ton of additional content in the form of crossover characters, among others. The last big DLC for Mortal Kombat 11 was Kombat Pack 2. It was released in October 2020 and added Mileena, Rain, and Rambo into Mortal Kombat 11. Now, fans are now speculating what NetherRealm Studios’ next project will be.

— Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate (@MortalKombat) July 2, 2021 A few months ago, there were rumors that NetherRealm was working on a Marvel fighting game. However, because NetherRealm was still technically working on Mortal Kombat 11, most thought nothing of it, even after Mortal Kombat’s creator, Ed Boon, teased NetherRealm’s next project himself. Fast forward to today and the rumors are starting to make a lot more sense. If there was ever a studio to work on a Marvel fighting game, NetherRealm would be it. In case you’ve forgotten, NetherRealm isn’t just a one-trick pony. In addition to the Mortal Kombat games, NetherRealm also gave birth to the Injustice franchise. This is why DC characters often crossover to the Mortal Kombat games and vice versa. Of course, this is all speculation at this point, NetherRealm Studios might not even be working on a new fighting game at all. Although that would be a shame, we wouldn’t blame them. The studio has the resources and the personnel to try out other genres as well. But, if NetherRealm is indeed working on a Marvel fighting game, then we’re all for it. It’s worthing noting that Marvel is crossing over to video games more often these days too. Marvel’s Avengers, which is set to receive its latest Wakanda-sized expansion, is doing better after a poor start. Meanwhile, Loki is available in Fornite as a playable skin. There are also several other Marvel projects in development, including Marvel Future Revolution and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. We’re pretty sure that fans wouldn’t mind seeing a new Marvel fighting game added to that list.
