A recent Inside the Gilliverse podcast played host to Gilligan where he shared his thoughts about the incoming finale of the Breaking Bad spin-off, Better Call Saul. Gilligan then had a candid reply once the interview went the route of video game adaptations. Gilligan revealed that he got to a point where he wanted to ask Rockstar Games if they would do a DLC or spin-off for Grand Theft Auto based on Breaking Bad. Gilligan admits that he isn’t much of a gamer, so the terms are lost with him. But, the desire for a Breaking Bad video game adaptation is there. Moving on, Gilligan revealed that this wasn’t the only attempt at making a Breaking Bad video game. Gilligan added that “some of them kind of sort of made it to market,” after the team put on “energy and effort and talent” to make them happen. Gilligan also referred to 2019’s Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements as an example of a Breaking Bad video game. But, the game has since shut down with virtually zero fanfare. Ultimately, Gilligan had terrible news for those who are looking forward to a Breaking Bad video game. According to the showrunner, who is also the brains behind Better Call Saul, making a video game “literally takes years and years and millions of dollars.” Gilligan also shared his concern about the pressure of ensuring that anything related to Breaking Bad is on par with the show’s standards. If it’s any consolation, it might not necessarily be impossible for us to see at least someone from Breaking Bad make it into a video game. There’s an ongoing movement to bring Bryan Cranston’s Walter White into Warner Bros.’s melee fighter, MultiVersus. A modder has even added Giancarlo Esposito’s Gus Fring into the game. Judging by how much traction this has gotten, it might only be a matter of time before we see “The One Who Knocks” become a playable fighter in MultiVersus. Also, since we’re on the topic, Rockstar, if you’re listening, this is your chance to ask Gilligan if he’d like to collaborate with you on a Breaking Bad-themed DLC for Grand Theft Auto Online.
