Just days into the test, someone has already broken their non-disclosure agreement to leak Overwatch 2 info. The leaked image that’s been circulating on Imgur lately confirms the shift from 6v6 to 5v5 gameplay for Overwatch 2 and it appears that one of the names on the screen might be familiar to Overwatch League fans.
McGravy is currently an assistant coach for the Florida Mayhem, one of the teams in North America playing in the Overwatch League. At the very least, the name gives credence to the legitimacy of the leak as only a handful of people have access to Overwatch 2 right now, which includes professional Overwatch League players as well as their team staff members. What’s particularly interesting about the leaked image is the presumed redesign of Soldier: 76. If you pay close attention to the Damage Hero’s character model, Soldier: 76 looks a lot older in the Overwatch 2 select screen with no signs of the mask that covered the majority of his face in the original game, plus he now sports a grown-out Reinhardt-like beard. Of course, it would make sense for Soldier: 76 to look older in Overwatch 2 as the sequel’s events take place years after the original game following a second omnic uprising. Not to mention, the added details on the facial model suggest that Blizzard is taking advantage of the more powerful hardware that’s available today, which is good news. In addition to Soldier: 76, the leaked character select screen also includes a look at Sojourn’s character select model as well as Doomfist’s transition into the Tank role. It also looks like Lucio will have a slightly different look in Overwatch 2 too. Ultimately, it’s best to remember that Overwatch 2 is still in Alpha. A lot can still change between now and the game’s beta period in April as well as the final build whenever it comes out. But, as we’ve said, we can expect to see more of these leaks in the coming days with Blizzard probably dropping some official news now and then to keep casual fans in the loop.
