Add to that the fact that a series of new Netflix animated shows and a live-action film is all in the works and, understandably, Resident Evil’s popularity is sky-high. With that being said, this resurgence in popularity has led to many fans speculating that maybe it’s time for Capcom to re-work arguably the franchise’s best title. Resident Evil 4 remains a fan favorite and is beloved by critics and if rumors or leaks are to be believed, it’s the next big Resident Evil game that’s set to receive the remake treatment.

Is a Resident Evil 4 Remake In the Works?

As of the time of writing, there’s no official news as yet that Capcom is working on a Resident Evil 4 Remake.  However, multiple sources have confirmed its existence. This includes VGC, which wrote that it was in development back in April 2020. Adding fuel to the ever-churning rumor mill was the same leaker who revealed details regarding Resident Evil 8, Dusk Golem. In a tweet dating back to April 13, 2020, he revealed that M-Two had started working on the remake in 2018 and is using a much larger team than the ones used for both the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes. Numerous resources have since confirmed the project’s existence, which suggests that it is indeed in development. In fact, just recently, Video Games Chronicle published another article detailing that M-Two is no longer in charge of the remake and the reigns have instead been handed to Capcom Division 1, the team normally responsible for handling the development of Devil May Cry and Resident Evil titles. With so many rumors surrounding the title, it’s probably only a matter of time before Capcom officially confirms its existence.

Why Is a Resident Evil 4 Remake Necessary?

Resident Evil 4 is arguably the most influential title in the Resident Evil franchise, with its impact being felt throughout the entire gaming industry and in other genres. The control scheme and formula that the 2005 title introduced and used became the blueprint for numerous third-person action shooters that many continue to follow until this very day. This isn’t including just how true the story of the game is to the Resident Evil formula, with players taking control of Leon Kennedy, the other main character in Resident Evil 2 and the Resident Evil 2 Remake, as he goes from rookie RCPD cop to being sent to kidnap the daughter of the President of the United States. In doing so, Leon finds himself at odds against a cult and the story eventually ties up to the previous games.

When Will the Resident Evil 4 Remake Release?

The earlier April 2020 leak pointed to a 22 release date for the Resident Evil 4 Remake. However, after news broke out that the game saw a major overhaul in the middle of development, we wouldn’t be surprised if Capcom decides to push back its release until 2023. If that is indeed the case, there’ll be a two-year gap in the release between the Resident Evil 4 Remake and the upcoming Resident Evil Village.
