What Do The Reviews Say of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart isn’t scheduled to release until June 11. However, the “interdimensional adventure” that was specifically designed to make use of the PlayStation 5’s proprietary SSD technology to allow players to transport seamlessly from one location to another has been drawing rave reviews from a lot of publications. Before anything else though, let’s talk about Rift Apart first. Rift Apart will serve as the first mainline title in Insomniac Games’ Ratchet & Clank series following 2016’s successful remake.
Rift Apart adds a bunch of new stuff to the classic platformer, including support for ray tracing. Similar to Insomniac Games’ other first-party title, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Rift Apart can run at dynamic 4K resolution with ray tracing turned on without dropping below 30 frames per second. In addition to arguably being the best graphical showcase for the PS5’s technical capabilities so far, Rift Apart also brings in a new playable character in the form of Rivet. Rivet is a female Lombax and is essentially the alternate reality version of Ratchet. Together, along with Clank, Rift Apart sees the trio travel across multiple dimensions to put an end to Dr. Nefarious’s evil plans. So far, all the reviews seem to point to Rift Apart being the best PS5-exclusive title yet. Rift Apart currently holds an 89 Metascore rating across 99 reviews. GameSpot’s Steve Watts gave Rift Apart a score of 9/10 in his review. He says that Rift Apart is “flashy and technically impressive without feeling self-important”. VGC echoed the same sentiments in its Rift Apart review, calling the PS5-exclusive title a “sumptuous showcase of what the PS5 can do.” EGM also gave Rift Apart a 10/10 in its review, saying that Ratchet and Clank’s latest outing is the first game that “feels like a true next-gen title.” Overall, the positive critic reviews just can’t seem to stop coming for Rift Apart, which is good news for Sony. This gives the PlayStation brand yet another console seller along with the likes of Returnal and Demon’s Souls, both of which are also considered excellent technical showcases of the PS5’s capabilities without necessarily compromising on gameplay. Is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart a Good Game?
There’s no denying it: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a good game. Whether it is the best game in the series is the question, but the reviews seem to indicate that it could very well be. The only problem is that having another good excuse to get a PS5 doesn’t necessarily make it easier to get your hands on a PS5 console these days, which is downright impossible regardless of wherever you may live in the world. With that said, Rift Apart is just as good of a reason to get a PS5 as any. The latest installment in the Ratchet & Clank franchise doesn’t necessarily reinvent the franchise’s formula nor does it bring a lot of new things to the table. However, it does improve on everything that its predecessors did, and then some. As a Ratchet & Clank game, Rift Apart could very well be the best yet. As a PS5 showcase, Rift Apart is completely unrivaled.
