The Scream franchise is one of the most famous film series in the horror genre. The first film in the series, directed by Wes Craven, was released in 1996. While Scream itself was a slasher film, it satirized the genre, spawned a series, and earned a cult following. Craven went on to direct three sequels, Scream 2, Scream 3, and Scream 4 before his death in 2015. Scream 5, which saw the Radio Silent directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett in charge, paid homage to Craven’s vision for the franchise and kept a cap on the gore. But, according to Barrera, things will be different in the next sequel. Apparently, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are always asking for more blood and sweat on set. In her words, “With the last Scream, they were tip-toeing and trying to be very respectful of what the franchise had been, up until that point, and keeping their inner gory dreams at bay. But with this one, they were like, “We’re going all out.” It’s potentially a hundred times gorier.” Barrera debuted in Scream 5, which was both a reboot and a sequel. Unfortunately, Neve Campbell, who has featured in every film in the franchise to date, will not be returning after talks stalled on her salary. The actress, who played Sidney Prescott, stated that the studio’s offer was too low given what she brings to the franchise. Nevertheless, Scream 6 will see Courtney Cox, one of the series’s familiar faces, reprise her role as Gale Weathers. Apart from her, the film will also see Hayden Panettiere reprise her role as Kirby Reed from Scream 4, Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter, Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin. Other cast members that will feature in the film are Samara Weaving, Dermot Mulroney, and Liana Liberato. Like its predecessor, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Ready or Not fame, will direct Scream 6, while William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein will produce. Barrera’s latest film, Bed Rest, premiered on Tubi on December 7. The horror thriller movie stars Barrera as the protagonist who, following a move into a new home, must take some measures to protect herself and her unborn baby from scary ghost experiences. Scream 6 is slated for release on March 10, 2023.
