According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, shared some information about Phase 6’s first film. Among other things, Feige clarified a key detail about the plot for Marvel’s first family. Here’s what Feige had to say about Hollywood’s third attempt to start a Fantastic Four film franchise: Feige is right. The MCU has set a high bar. The billion-dollar cinematic universe might have done an excellent job at exploring the origin stories, but the MCU is equally marvelous (pun intended) at skipping them altogether. Case in point, the first Black Panther film from 2018 wasn’t really an origin story and it ended up doing quite well for itself. The film earned the MCU several firsts when it comes to nominations on top of making over $1.3 billion at the global box office. The same goes for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, even though many argue that it’s an origin story spread across three films.

Origin stories are great for less popular heroes, but with two reboots over the past two decades, the Fantastic Four doesn’t need an introduction. If nothing else, the Fantastic Four would benefit from a film that goes straight into what the MCU’s iteration can do and what kind of threats it can handle. Speaking of the “other” Fantastic Four films, Marvel Studios has the benefit of outdoing the last few rather mediocre outings. If Marvel Studios can make Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing, consistent with their comic book counterparts, then audiences will lap the movie up. With more than two years to go before its premiere, we’ll find out more about the MCU’s Fantastic Four movie soon. If we’re lucky, we won’t have to wait until next year’s San Diego Comic-Con for the next bit of news about the Phase 6 film. For now, all we can do is wait as well as speculate about its cast members and the people behind the scenes, specifically, the director. Jon Watts was initially tapped for the directorial duties of the Fantastic Four movie after working on the MCU’s Spider-Man movies, but he has since taken a break from making blockbusters. In the meantime, MCU fans can keep themselves busy with a loaded Phase 5 slate of films. The next phase will start on February 17, 2023 with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and end with Thunderbolts on July 26, 2024.
