Now, a little over a year after confirming that it has ended support for Mortal Kombat 11, NetherRealm appears to be working on Mortal Kombat 12. According to a since-deleted tweet from the voice actor of Johnny Cage, Andrew Bowen, he is doing something with Warner Bros. Just like his in-game character, Bowen wasn’t subtle with the references. The video uses Mortal Kombat 2 music as background music. On top of this, as other fans pointed out, Bowen has posted similar updates over the past year. If true, this would suggest that NetherRealm has spent at least a year working on Mortal Kombat 12. If nothing else, the timeline would fit the earlier tease straight from the Twitter account of NetherRealm Studios producer, Jonathan Anderson, as well as last year’s report that the studio is working on Mortal Kombat 12 next, not Injustice 3. Ultimately, the only thing we can guarantee audiences is that NetherRealm is up to something. As we’ve already mentioned, it’s been years since NetherRealm came out with a new game (three to be exact). If NetherRealm is not actively developing Injustice 3, then we are certain that it’s in the lab cooking up something grotesque and brutal for Mortal Kombat 12. Who knows? The rumors about NetherRealm working on a Marvel game in the vein of the Injustice series might even be true. Unfortunately, since Warner Bros. doesn’t usually hold showcases for its games, we are at the mercy of the next big event to find out more about what the entertainment company is planning - and that’s if they even attend it. The good news here is that the new Warner Bros. Discovery management, now under the leadership of David Zaslav, wants to “bolster” the company’s DC games lineup. Hopefully, this means that we’re seeing more DC games on top of Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League going forward.
