This is just the latest in a series of moves that Zynga has made over the past year, to expand their business within the industry. In June 2020, Zynga acquired Turkish developers Peak for the hefty sum of $1.8 billion. They also recently announced that they are working on a free game for the Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms titled Star Wars Hunters.

What’s Next for Echtra Games?

According to their official statement, Zynga stated that they acquired Echtra Games to work on a cross-platform RPG. However, they did not go into detail as to what game this would be and when it would be released. Zynga also added that the acquisition will give them the opportunity to expand their reach in the PC, as well as console, gaming markets. On a similar note, Zynga also didn’t really reveal too much about Star Wars Hunters. Instead, all we have to go on is that it’s a free-to-play title and that EA won’t be involved in the game’s development in any way or form. Echtra Games was founded in 2016 and hosts numerous industry veterans. This includes people who have worked on the likes of Diablo and Diablo II, as well as The Sims 4. In addition to this, their staff members have a lot of experience working on numerous platforms, so a cross-platform RPG is definitely right up their alley. However, it’s worth taking note that Torchlight 3 is widely considered the worst game in the Torchlight series. It’s not particularly popular among fans of dungeon crawlers. It’ll definitely be interesting to see what kind of game they’ll release going forward. Hopefully, with the backing of a publishing company as big as Zynga, they’ll be able to create a game that matches up with the caliber of talent in their roster.
